Jet directions in Seyfert galaxies: B and I imaging data
We present the results of broad-band B and I imaging observations for a
sample of 88 Seyfert galaxies (29 Seyfert 1's and 59 Seyfert 2's), selected
from a mostly isotropic property, the flux at 60m. We also present the B
and I imaging results for an additional sample of 20 Seyfert galaxies (7
Seyfert 1's and 13 Seyfert 2's), selected from the literature and known to have
extended radio emission. The I band images are fitted with ellipses to
determine the position angle and ellipticity of the host galaxy major axis.
This information will be used in a future paper, combined with information from
radio observations, to study the orientation of radio jets relative to the
plane of their host galaxies (Kinney et al. 2000). Here we present surface
brightness profiles and magnitudes in the B and I bands, as well as mean

The Optical Polarization and Warm Absorber in IRAS 17020+4544
We report the detection of ionized absorption in the ASCA spectrum of the
narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 17020+4544. Subsequent optical
spectropolarimetry revealed high polarization increasing from 3% in the red to
5% in the blue, indicating electron or dust scattering as a likely origin. The
broad emission line H is somewhat less polarized than the continuum,
supporting a location of the polarizing material within the AGN. The Balmer
line decrement and reddened optical spectrum support the presence of a dusty
warm absorber in this object.
We compared the broad band optical polarization and ionized X-ray absorption
of a collection of Seyfert 1 and 1.5 galaxies, excluding classes of objects
that are likely to have significant neutral X-ray absorption. Warm absorber
objects are generally more likely to have high optical polarization than
objects with no detected ionized absorption. This result lends additional
support to the idea that the warm absorber is associated with dust and implies
either that dust transmission is responsible for at least part of the
polarization or that the polarization is revealed because of the dimming of the
optical spectrum. Spectropolarimetry of Seyfert 1s generally locates the
scattering material inside the narrow-line region and often close to or within
the broad line region, consistent with estimates of the location of the dusty

Impact of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist Relative to Its Design and Intended Use: A Systematic Review and Meta-Meta-Analysis
BackgroundThe aim of this study was to identify what parts of the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist (WHO SSC) are working, what can be done to make it more effective, and to determine if it achieved its intended effect relative to its design and intended use. Study DesignWe conducted a qualitative thematic analysis and meta-meta-analyses of findings in WHO SSC systematic reviews following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Results Twenty systematic reviews were included for qualitative thematic analysis. Narrative information was coded in 4 primary areas with a focus on impact of the WHO SSC. Four themesâClinical Outcomes, Process Measures, Team Dynamics and Communication, and Safety Cultureâpertained directly to the aims or purposes behind the development of the SSC. The other 2 themesâEfficiency and Workload involved in using the checklist and Checklist Impact on Institutional Practicesâare associated with SSC use, but were not focal areas considered during its development. Included in the 20 systematic reviews were 24 unique observational cohort studies that reported pre-post data on a total of 18 clinical outcomes. Mortality, morbidity, surgical site infection, pneumonia, unplanned return to the operating room, urinary tract infection, blood loss requiring transfusion, unplanned intubation, and sepsis favored the use of the WHO SSC. Deep vein thrombosis was the only postoperative outcome assessed that did not favor use of the WHO SSC. ConclusionsThe WHO SSC positively impacts the things it was explicitly designed to address and does not positively impact things it was not explicitly designed for
Transnationalism and Social Work Education
Transnational movements, networks, and relationships are everywhere in this âworld on the moveâ (Williams & Graham, 2014, p. i1). Transnational peoples maintain relationships of interdependence and support with families and communities in their places of origin, often returning regularly, while starting new lives and making new connections. Transnationalism is characterized by mobilities and networks, by social integration, and by extended and extensive relationship ties of family, neighborhood, religious faith, or combinations thereof (Valtonen, 2008). While disciplines across the world including sociology, human geography, and cultural anthropology engage with the implications of transnationalism (Bauböck & Faist, 2010), social work in England and mainland Europe has not achieved similar levels of engagement. As Cox and Geisen state: âthe social world is being transformed by migration and social work is playing catch-upâ (2014, p. i162)
Health of Philippine Emigrants Study (HoPES): study design and rationale.
BackgroundImmigrants to the United States are usually healthier than their U.S.-born counterparts, yet the health of immigrants declines with duration of stay in the U.S. This pattern is often seen for numerous health problems such as obesity, and is usually attributed to acculturation (the adoption of "American" behaviors and norms). However, an alternative explanation is secular trends, given that rates of obesity have been rising globally. Few studies of immigrants are designed to distinguish the effects of acculturation versus secular trends, in part because most studies of immigrants are cross-sectional, lack baseline data prior to migration, and do not have a comparison group of non-migrants in the country of origin. This paper describes the Health of Philippine Emigrants Study (HoPES), a study designed to address many of these limitations.MethodsHoPES is a dual-cohort, longitudinal, transnational study. The first cohort consisted of Filipinos migrating to the United States (nâ=â832). The second cohort consisted of non-migrant Filipinos who planned to remain in the Philippines (nâ=â805). Baseline data were collected from both cohorts in 2017 in the Philippines, with follow-up data collection planned over 3 years in either the U.S. for the migrant cohort or the Philippines for the non-migrant cohort. At baseline, interviewers administered semi-structured questionnaires that assessed demographic characteristics, diet, physical activity, stress, and immigration experiences. Interviewers also measured weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, blood pressure, and collected dried blood spot samples.DiscussionMigrants enrolled in the study appear to be representative of recent Filipino migrants to the U.S. Additionally, migrant and non-migrant study participants are comparable on several characteristics that we attempted to balance at baseline, including age, gender, and education. HoPES is a unique study that approximates a natural experiment from which to study the effects of immigration on obesity and other health problems. A number of innovative methodological strategies were pursued to expand the boundaries of current immigrant health research. Unsedated transnasal endoscopy:a safe, well-tolerated and accurate alternative to standard diagnostic peroral endoscopy
Diagnostic unsedated transnasal endoscopy (uTNE) has been proven to be a safe and well-tolerated procedure. Although its utilization in the United Kingdom (UK) is increasing, it is currently available in only a few centers. Through consideration of recent studies, we aimed to perform an updated review of the technological advances in uTNE, consider their impact on diagnostic accuracy, and to determine the role of uTNE in the COVID-19 era. Current literature has shown that the diagnostic accuracy of uTNE for identification of esophageal pathology is equivalent to conventional esophagogastroduodenoscopy (cEGD). Concerns regarding suction and biopsy size have been addressed by the introduction of TNE scopes with working channels of 2.4 mm. Advances in imaging have improved detection of early gastric cancers. The procedure is associated with less cardiac stress and reduced aerosol production; when combined with no need for sedation and improved rates of patient turnover, uTNE is an efficient and safe alternative to cEGD in the COVID-19 era. We conclude that advances in technology have improved the diagnostic accuracy of uTNE to the point where it could be considered the first line diagnostic endoscopic investigation in the majority of patients. It could also play a central role in the recovery of diagnostic endoscopic services during the COVID-19 pandemic
Direct measurement of the jet geometry in Seyfert galaxies
We demonstrate that, by combining optical, radio and X-ray observations of a
Seyfert, it is possible to provide a direct measurement of the angle
between the direction of the radio jet and the normal to the plane of the
spiral host galaxy. To do so, we make the assumptions that the inner radio jet
is perpendicular to the X-ray observed inner accretion disk, and that the
observed jet (or the stronger component, if the jet is two-sided) is physically
closer to Earth than the plane of the galaxy. We draw attention to the
possibility of measurement producing a result which is not self-consistent, in

Disrupting the CH1 Domain Structure in the Acetyltransferases CBP and p300 Results in Lean Mice with Increased Metabolic Control
SummaryOpposing activities of acetyltransferases and deacetylases help regulate energy balance. Mice heterozygous for the acetyltransferase CREB binding protein (CBP) are lean and insulin sensitized, but how CBP regulates energy homeostasis is unclear. In one model, the main CBP interaction with the glucagon-responsive factor CREB is not limiting for liver gluconeogenesis, whereas a second model posits that Ser436 in the CH1 (TAZ1) domain of CBP is required for insulin and the antidiabetic drug metformin to inhibit CREB-mediated liver gluconeogenesis. Here we show that conditional knockout of CBP in liver does not decrease fasting blood glucose or gluconeogenic gene expression, consistent with the first model. However, mice in which the CBP CH1 domain structure is disrupted by deleting residues 342â393Â (ÎCH1) are lean and insulin sensitized, as are p300ÎCH1 mutants. CBPÎCH1/ÎCH1 mice remain metformin responsive. An intact CH1 domain is thus necessary for normal energy storage, but not for the blood glucose-lowering actions of insulin and metformin
Triangular Ring Resonator: Direct measurement of the parity-odd parameters of the photon sector of SME
We introduce the the Triangular Ring (TR) resonator. We show that the
difference between the clockwise and anti-clockwise resonant frequencies of a
vacuum TR resonator is sensitive to the birefringence parity-odd parameters of
the photon's sector of the minimal Standard Model Extension (mSME): the
Standard Model plus all the perturbative parameters encoding the break the
Lorentz symmetry. We report that utilizing the current technology allows for
direct measurement of these parameters with a sensitivity of the parity even
ones and improves the best current resonator bounds by couple of orders of
magnitudes.
We note that designing an optical table that rotates perpendicular to the
gravitational equipotential surface (geoid) allows for direct measurement of
the constancy of the light speed at the vicinity of the earth in all directions
in particular perpendicular to the geoid. If this table could achieve the
precision of the ordinary tables, then it would improve the GPS bounds on the
constancy of the light speed perpendicular to geoid by about eight orders of
